Lab report help: how to write IMRAD outline

The IMRAD outline is one of the most common word that you will have to come across while doing various scientific researches and reports, for instance in the lab reports. Sometimes you may be wondering what it is all about. It is actually a format that is necessary to learn and understand in any scientific academic research papers. Some people call it the APA format but both mean the same thing. In short we can say this is the IBC format in a more defined version. The IBC format takes the Introduction, Body, Conclusion format, which is universally applied across all academic writing. On the other hand the IMRAD format comprises of five main stages while writing any academic paper. The stages are as outlined below.

Introduction (I)

This is the first stage of any scientific lab report. This part mainly entails an explanation as to why a specific research was conducted. In a summary, you will give the questions you are trying to answer in the research and the related details as contained in the previous researches. In relation to the previous research, how did the information given make you decide to carry out your own research? In case your research is about improving or continuing with a previous project, the introduction part is what carries such details or information.

Materials and Methods (M)

This is the part of a lab report that contains the description of everything that you carried out in the research and how you carried out the research. For instance, you will answer questions regarding to what you used in the research, where you put them and how you made your observations. The kind of data you may have recorded should also be shown on this part or lab report help outline and how you made the recordings of the observed data. Results (R)

Discussion and conclusion (D)

This is the part that gives the answers asked in the introduction part of the research. This is also referred to as the conclusion to the study carried out. The main question to be answered therefore is whether your study revealed what you were intending to find out or were the results different from your expectations? What are the concluding remarks in regard to the analysis stage? Ideas concerning future research studies can also be incorporated at this stage.
