Narrative or personal essays normally centre on the writer's experience or group of experiences in his life. This basically tells a story. The contents could be any of the following.
One of the most important things in a narrative essay is that it highlights a specific point. At the end of the essay the writer must derive a conclusion based on the experience described. Narrative essays are much more flexible in terms of form and message.
The purpose of a descriptive essay is to describe a person, object, place, experience, situation etc. in clear details so that the reader can form an accurate mental picture of what has been written in the essay. The author might use various tools - imaginative language, appealing images or interesting comparisons - to accomplish this. This tests the student's ability to write clearly on a specific experience. Normally this methodology is used often in literature courses; however, the student may use this for describing an experiment or laboratory assignment in natural sciences. They can also be used in social sciences research projects that are large in nature. Descriptive essays have to be written only when called for. Normally professors prefer analysis in your essays.
An argument takes place when there is a controversy. An argumentative research paper originates from a controversial topic. Such a topic will have umpteen views which are different from one another and it is necessary that a writer has his own views on this topic. He has to argue out and convince the readers about the correctness of his opinion on the topic under consideration. It is necessary that he collects data, facts and evidences that validate his opinion. He has to provide sufficient examples from real-life situations to substantiate his opinion. He must organize his findings and put up his arguments supported by his own findings to persuade the reader to accept his point of view.
The main purpose of persuasive essays is to make the reader agree with your viewpoint and accept your recommendations for any action. For example, you might argue that software engineers are paid much more than what they deserve. Or, you might recommend that liquor shops should not be opened near schools. Your essay must present necessary evidence to support your argument taking into consideration opposing views and arrive at a conclusion. This is similar to Argumentative essays.
Cause and effect essays are based on a cause-and-effect relationship. The cause is the reason for some happening whereas the effect is the result of happening. Cause-and-effect essays establish a relationship between events and they happen in the time order. First comes the cause and it is followed by effect.
Literary analysis essays are most commonly written for courses in English or literature. In this category of essays, you are expected to make clear your viewpoint or express an idea about a book or its author. You may draw your idea from the text of the book or author's work or similar works of other authors. Literary analysis can either be formal or informal/ conversational depending on the course.
A Compare or Contrast essay is an essay wherein you either compare something or contrast something. In compare essay you emphasize the similarities whereas in a contrast essay you emphasize the differences. We use comparison and contrast methodology more often in life - to decide on the university to attend, car to buy etc.This form of essays is commonly written in high schools but some colleges do follow this methodology. For compare and contrast essays, you have to cite sources and conduct research.
