Research paper on Management: writing plan and good topic ideas Oct 20, 2012
Management is an essential component of any business and an intricate part of our everyday lives. It's a very valuable asset to have in any economy. The overall know-how to apply learned techniques in any industry priceless. The definition of management encompasses many things. In general its organizing, planning, and leading others to improve overall business performance. Though management is not limited to business as it can also be used in other arenas to simply achieve a desired goal.
A research paper
of any discipline requires a few key elements for successful completion. The main objective is the same; to inform or explain. In accomplishing one of these tasks you will either need to conduct original research on management or analyze particular management theories and provide original information on that through examination and evaluation.
Step 1: Choose a topic for your management paper
Before you can even begin any type of research or writing plan you need to lock down a solid topic. Your topic should be specific enough to be properly analyzed in the confines of a research paper but not too specific that the information on the topic is not readily available or an insufficient quantity.
The good thing about managememt is that its just about everywhere-even in the way we run our households. So choosing a topic is just as easy as thinking of an industry that you are interested in and an applicable theory to lead the way.
*Though if your research paper involves research theory then obviously you should have several theories in your pocket to formulate a good argument.
Experimental research topics
For experimental research once you've chosen an industry that you'd like to investigate, next, the more difficult part, is to determine what specific aspect of the management culture, practices, application etc. you'd like to examine. An easy way to do this is to seek businesses that have recently made changes in their management structure or have applied new management techniques or theories to their business.
Theoretical research topics
For theoretical research look for connections amongst various theories and common problems or flaws in the foundations of those theories. Theoretical papers should also identify a problem and propose an original solution.
For example, you may want to pinpoint one aspect of management to explore and then work with the available theories that relate to that topic. This is commonly accomplished by grouping like theories. Some management theory categories you may find are project management, human resource management, employee performance management etc.

Capabilities and Organizational Economics: How Do They Relate?
Description: A long-standing discussion in management research concerns the relation between capabilities perspectives on the firm and organizational economics, including transaction cost economics and agency theory.
Sample experimental topic from the Journal of Brand Management
Important factors to consider when using internal branding as a management strategy: A healthcare case study (Rod Gapp & Bill Merrilees)
Step 2: Construct your paper
How to write a paper using original research
If you've opted for this approach you will first need to identify an area that you would like to examine. For example, a case study on management in healthcare will require original research on a select healthcare facility in which you would then have to identify the following; (a) what it is about the company and its management that you want to study (b) your methods of research or how you will obtain the information (c) the evaluators that you will use to examine your topic.
After the research is conducted, in the section of your research paper reserved for the results of the study you will explain your findings to your audience. Lastly, there should be a chapter for the discussion or examination of what you found and what it means for your field of study.
*Though not mentioned earlier you would also need to have an introduction stating your thesis or main idea and a conclusion to revisit your objective as well as propose thoughtful concepts or suggestions.
How to formulate a paper with theoretical research
Theoretical papers follow a simple formula with much weight being placed on the researchers examination of the current literature and research on his or her select topic. Without proper examination of what has already been explored and evaluated it would be difficult to provide new innovative solutions to that problem.
The main body of your management theory research paper should include an introduction where you state the problem and what you will accomplish in your argument. Next, include a section on your literature review, an analysis of your solution with sufficient evidence to support your claims and a well-formulated conclusion.
One tip to writing a successful management research paper
is to know your theories and strategies. Management is a broad topic and covers many aspects of business life. To simplify things a bit and improve your chances of a stress-free research process start thinking about what specific aspects you want to focus on far before you begin identifying and narrowing down a topic. If you already have a business or industry in mind, start looking at the history and makeup of their management departments and begin brainstorming ideas of how you can go about examining and evaluating that company's practices and success rates.
Theories on management
There are many theories on how to study and improve management practices. In formulating your research report you can choose to concentrate on one group or category of theories and then identify businesses or organizations that implement those theories and practices or likewise identify a particular business or industry and then investigate what theories and practices are common for that industry. back to all posts
